If you are a foreign national living in Czechia, you may be wondering whether you can vote for your local municipal council (<em>zastupitelstvo obce<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer depends primarily on your citizenship. Having temporary or permanent residence in the Czech Republic does not automatically give every foreign national the right to vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EU Citizens Can Vote in Czech Municipal Elections<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citizens of other European Union Member States can vote in Czech municipal elections and, provided they meet the requirements, can also stand as candidates for their local municipal council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To vote in the 2026 municipal elections as an EU citizen, you must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>be at least 18 years old by 10 October 2026,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have permanent residence (<em>trval\u00fd pobyt<\/em>) or registered temporary residence (<em>p\u0159echodn\u00fd pobyt<\/em>) in the Czech Republic,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have that residence registered in the municipality where you intend to vote, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be entered in the supplement to the permanent voter register (<em>dodatek st\u00e1l\u00e9ho seznamu voli\u010d\u016f<\/em>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simply living in the Czech Republic without the required registered residence is not sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can EU Citizens Stand for Office?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EU citizens who meet the statutory requirements can also stand as candidates in Czech municipal elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means that an eligible EU citizen can be elected as a member of the municipal council (<em>zastupitel<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Czech law makes an important distinction when it comes to certain municipal leadership positions. The positions of Mayor (<em>starosta<\/em>) and Deputy Mayor (<em>m\u00edstostarosta<\/em>) are reserved for Czech citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What About Non-EU Citizens?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For citizens of countries outside the European Union, the situation is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holding temporary or even permanent residence in the Czech Republic <strong>no<\/strong> by itself provide the right to vote in Czech municipal elections. This applies regardless of how long a person has lived in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, nationals of countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ukraine or Vietnam cannot vote in the 2026 Czech municipal elections solely based on their Czech residence status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, a non-EU national who also holds citizenship of an EU Member State may qualify to vote on the basis of that EU citizenship, provided that the other statutory requirements are met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EU Citizens Need to Check Their Voter Registration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike Czech citizens, eligible foreign EU citizens need to make sure they are entered in the <strong>supplement to the permanent voter register<\/strong> (<em>dodatek st\u00e1l\u00e9ho seznamu voli\u010d\u016f<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The register is maintained by the relevant municipal authority, and EU citizens can request registration at the municipal office responsible for their place of registered residence. You must apply for registration in the supplement to the permanent voter register no later than two days before the election (for the 2026 elections, by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday 7 October 2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you were already entered in the supplement for previous municipal elections and you continue to meet the relevant conditions in the same municipality, you generally do not need to register again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a good idea to check your registration with your municipal authority well before election day, particularly if you have moved since the previous elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Can EU Citizens Vote?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eligible EU citizens vote in the municipality where they have their officially registered residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your registered address determines the relevant polling district and polling station. In territorially divided statutory cities, including Prague, your address may also determine the relevant municipal district or city district election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Municipal elections take place <strong>only within the territory of the Czech Republic<\/strong>. It is not possible to vote in Czech municipal elections from abroad or at a Czech embassy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike some other Czech elections, <strong>voter certificates (<em>voli\u010dsk\u00fd pr\u016fkaz<\/em>) are not available for municipal elections<\/strong>. You therefore cannot choose another polling station elsewhere in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Are the 2026 Czech Municipal Elections?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2026 Czech municipal elections will take place over two days:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Friday, 9 October 2026:<\/strong> 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.<br><strong>Saturday, 10 October 2026:<\/strong> 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The municipal elections will be held at the same time as the first round of the 2026 Senate elections in the Senate constituencies voting that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important to remember that the eligibility rules are different. An eligible EU citizen may vote in the <strong>municipal elections<\/strong>, while voting in elections to the Czech Senate is reserved for Czech citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Czech Citizenship and Voting Rights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For foreign nationals who have made the Czech Republic their long-term home, elections highlight an important distinction between residence and citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Permanent residence provides many rights in Czechia, but for non-EU citizens it does not include the right to vote in municipal elections.
