What documents will you need?
To apply for your Czech passport, prepare the following:
• Original Czech birth certificate
• Original Citizenship Certificate not older than one year
Where can you apply?
You can apply either in the Czech Republic or at a Czech consulate abroad.
Applying in the Czech Republic
You can apply at any municipal office in the Czech Republic without needing an appointment.
You can also provide an email address or Czech phone number. The office will notify you once your passport is ready for pick up. If you use our assistance, we can provide our phone number and let you know right away after we receive the notification.
English speaking clerks will be more an exception than a rule, so bringing a Czech-speaking person can make the process even easier.
Applying Abroad
If you are outside the Czech Republic, you can apply at any Czech Embassy or Czech Consulate General. In most cases, you will need to book an appointment in advance. Always check up to date information and guidance of the Consulate you want to use. In the US, you should use Embassy / General Consulate based on your address.
If your Embassy or Consulate General is not near, you can generally also choose to pick up your passport at a Honorary Consulate (you cannot apply for passport there, only pick it up and you have to indicate that when you apply and some special conditions may aply and always consult this possibility in advance with the office you will be applying in).
Sometimes you may also need to bring your own ID photographs.
What happens at the appointment?
When you arrive, you take a number from the ticket machine. Once your number is called, you go to the clerk.
After your documents are checked, the clerk will take your photo and fingerprints. The entire appointment usually takes no more than 15 minutes.
When will the passport be ready?
In the Czech Republic, you can choose how quickly your passport is issued:
• Standard: 30 days
• Fast: 5 days
• Express: 24 hours (available only in Prague)
You must pick up the passport in person.
If you apply at a Consulate General abroad, issuance may take up to 120 days.
How much will it cost?
The fee depends on the processing time:
• Express 24–hour passport: up to 6,000 CZK (aprox. USD 275)
• 5–day passport: up to 3,000 CZK (aprox. USD 140)
• Standard 30–day passport: 600 CZK (aprox. USD 28)
